Vintage 1940's Colclough Bone China Crinoline Lady Gold Chintz Tea Cup and Saucer
SOLD!
This wonderful Colclough bone china tea cup and matching saucer was produced in England in the 1940's. This design has come to be known as the Crinoline Lady because of the crinoline petticoat the lady wears that makes her long skirt stand out.
The gold decoration around the lady is called chintz. The name chintz comes from fine fabrics imported from India in the 17th century. Chintz designs are colorful, all-over patterns of flowers, sometimes with other motifs like birds. Chintz became popular during the 1930's. These cheerful porcelain pieces were just what the American homemaker needed during the Great Depression.
This pair of cups and saucers are marked Colclough, Bone China, Made in England. The backstamp on this cup and saucer was used by Colclough between 1939 and 1952.
